Month to month, we want to pull back the curtains and give you some insight into our people, what drives them and how they spend their time outside of work. 

This month, we’re shining a spotlight on John Wybar, a key player whose dedication to our customers and passion for property lending have made him an invaluable asset to VM Finance. 

What Does Your Role at VM Finance Involve

“I manage a portfolio of valued customers, focusing on the lending side. This includes writing credit applications, site visits, and organising networking events. I love being face-to-face with people and the pleasure you get from helping them realise their vision.

My day-to-day often involves managing risks, solving problems, and ensuring we meet our clients’ lending needs to help them achieve their goals.”

How Did You Find Your Path into the Industry?

“My path into banking began serendipitously after a business administration course at Kent University. My placement at Lloyds Bank, working with distressed companies, ignited my passion for customer interaction. After university, I rejoined Lloyds in London, eventually gravitating towards property lending, which led me to my role at the Bank of Cyprus, and after some industry shifts, to VM Finance.”

What Motivates You?

“What motivates me is the customer-facing aspect of my job. Building relationships, understanding their needs, and helping them succeed is what gets me up in the morning. It’s about making a tangible difference in their ventures, which truly drives me.

At VM Finance, we’re very customer-focused and take the time to properly understand our clients and their vision. This depth of service is very important to me and one of the reasons why I’m so at home at the company.”

What do you get up to outside of work?

“When I’m not at work, you’ll likely find me at a Watford FC game. I’m a season ticket holder, and attending matches is a cherished tradition with my dad and brother. It’s more than just watching football; it’s about family bonding against the backdrop of all the drama the big game has to offer. 

Apart from football, I enjoy socialising, dabbling in golf, and taking long walks, often venturing to the Kent coast, Cornwall, or Yorkshire.

Travel is a big part of my life, (luckily, I made the strategic choice of living close to the airport). This allows for easy getaways to places all over Europe and, occasionally, further afield. But above all, my love for food stands out. Whether it’s cooking at home, exploring new cuisines, or staying updated on the culinary world, food is a huge passion of mine. Can’t say I’ve ever fancied being a chef, but I think I’d give Jay Raynor a run for his money as a food critic.”
